What are Obedience Trials?
Obedience trials showcase dogs that have been trained and conditioned to behave well at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. Starting from the most basic – walking nicely on a loose lead by your side, to the very advanced – where dogs distinguish an item with their handler’s scent from a pile of similar items, obedience trials showcase not only our dogs’ abilities, but also the partnership between dog and handler.
What are Rally Trials?
In Rally trials, dog and handler teams compete a course designed by the Rally judge, moving through stations with signs that provide instruction on the skill to be performed. Rally emphasizes communication and team work between dog and handler, bringing a lot of competitors into companion events with their dogs.
Come watch our Basset Hounds compete in these trials and show off both their talents and their creativity with the routines!
Date and Place
The BHCA National Obedience and Rally Trials will be held on Tuesday, October 3rd, in the Expo Hall at the Host Hotel. There will be two Obedience and two Rally trials which will run “back to back”. When combined with the Obedience and Rally trials sponsored by Pilgrim and Potomac Basset Hound Clubs earlier in the week, handlers have the opportunity to complete a companion title during Nationals week.
Patricia Hess will judge the BHCA obedience and rally trials.
Dogs have played a very important part of my life;. My family dog was a Great Dane. We later obtained German Shepherds. My first obedience title was with my German Shepherd, “Stormy,” whom I purchased while living in Germany. We earned Schutzhund I and II titles. After returning to the United States, he went on to earn many more titles. I also have shown, and bred, Pembroke Welsh Corgis for quite a few years, and have many home-bred Champions as well as performance titles.
In 1977, I was approved by the AKC to judge Obedience, and later, Rally. I am also an approved judge for Conformation in all Herding, Working, and Sporting Groups. I find satisfaction in all aspects of obedience and rally judging. I have been director of training for several clubs over many years.
I am a member of a number of local kennel and training clubs, local breed clubs, the Maryland Sporting Dog Association, and national parent clubs for Pembroke Welsh Corgis and German Shepherds. I have served in many capacities and offices in these clubs over the years.
I appreciate being invited and am very much looking forward to judging your trials.
